Fourth of July Etiquette

4thofjulygift One of the highlights of the summer is the 4th of July Holiday when we commemorate the Declaration of Independence of the USA.  Chances are you and your family are invited to a 4th of July Party, and you may be wondering what is the etiquette for such a holiday party. Someone Spoil Me tells us the top 4 things to know before attending this year's Fourth of July party.

Fourth of July Etiquette by SomeoneSpoilMe.com

1. RSVP:  When people go out of their way to invite you to their party, you must respond.  You CANNOT just ignore the invite and you certainly CANNOT just attend the party.

2. Bring a Gift: Since the host is "hosting" a party it appropriate to bring something that she can easily use at the party.  Meaning a box of cookies in an attractive tin that she can simply set on the table  or festive lollipops that can be also be used as a centerpiece on a side table.  The last thing the host wants is a bouquet of flowers that does not come with a vase; she has been in the kitchen all day - so unless you plan on helping her (obviously not) bring the flowers in a vase.

3. Remember, You are the Guest:  While you may think that there is a better way to set up the dessert table or grill the burgers, remember that this is not your party.  Don't be a backseat driver.

4. Don't overstay your welcome. While Fourth of July parties do not typically have a definitive ending time, remember that the host has been preparing all morning and is probably pretty tired.  Respect her and leave before your children get cranky!

By the way, www.SomeoneSpoilMe.com also has a wonderful selection of gift ideas for your host/hostess.

Spider Bites - What to Do
By: Mom\'s Buzz    3 days 8 hours 59 minutes ago
Channel: Lifestyle Baby Pregnancy Family

Continuing our series of posts of what to do when you get bit or stung by a bug, today's post is about Spider Bites and what to do about it.  According to Kidshealth.com, you should take the following steps:

What to do About Spider Bites by Kidshealth.com

  1. Wash the area carefully with soap and water. Do this two to three times a day until skin is healed.
  2. Apply cool compresses.
  3. Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain.
  4. To protect against infection, apply an antibiotic ointment and keep the child's hands washed. If you have any reason to suspect a bite by a black widow or brown recluse spider, apply ice to the bite site and take your child to the emergency room. Even if a child doesn't show any symptoms, get medical attention right away.

Most spiders found in the United States are harmless, with the exception of the black widow and the brown recluse spider. The brown recluse spider a tiny oval brown spider with a small shape like a violin on its back is found mostly in Midwestern and southern parts of the United States. The bites usually don't hurt at first, and a child might not even be aware of the bite, but in some cases they cause swelling and changes in skin color and a blister.

The black widow spider, which is found all over North America, has a shiny black body and an orange hourglass shape on its underbelly. The venom (poison) in a black widow bite can cause painful cramps that show up within a few hours of the bite. The cramps can start in the muscles around the bite and then spread. The bite may also lead to nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, and muscle aches. If your child has any of these symptoms or you know that he or she has been bitten go to the emergency room right away.

In the southwest United States, an unidentified bite may be caused by a scorpion. Take your child to the emergency room immediately.

Above is a chart that summarizes what to do about spider bites. The chart is also available in our Useful Documents panel on the left hand sidebar for easy access, reference and printing or you may Download spiderbites.pdf  directly here.

Flats vs. High heels: How to fit properly
By: Mom\'s Buzz    4 days 12 hours 11 minutes ago
Channel: Lifestyle Baby Pregnancy Family

Highheels_2 When you do not try your flats properly, you may end up with a more uncomfortable shoe than your high heels. Tina Aldatz Norris, designer of FootPetals.com gives the following tips on how to fit properly flats and high heels, and more tips on flats vs. high heels proper fitting.

Flats vs. High heels: How to Fit Properly by Tina Aldatz Norris of FootPetals.com.

"Do the "double pinky test!" Your foot moves differently in flats with each step. Flats allow your foot to fully spread out with each step. The arch is our natural, built-in spring (kind of like a built in shock absorber) and it absorbs 3-5 times our body weight with every step. To test this theory, sit down and trace your foot...then stand up and trace it. The difference is how much space you need inside your shoes.

Step #1 - When trying on flats, make sure that you can fit the tip of your pinky between the back of the shoe and your foot while sitting. That's how much space your toes will need to "spring forward"

Step #2 - Make sure that you can actually wiggle your toes inside the shoes. If your pinky toes is smashed, get a bigger size.

Comfort Tip: To prevent feet from sliding around in shoes and to absorb the shock from these fabulous but often thin little shoes, add Killer Kushionz to the bottom & Heavenly Heelz to keep heels secure.

Why does this happen? In high heels, your toes will not "grow or spread" with each step because your foot will stretch out at least one full size.

FlyClear Through Security This Summer
By: Mom\'s Buzz    8 days 7 hours 58 minutes ago
Channel: Lifestyle

Flyclear Everyone knows that after 9/11, airport time and flying has not been enjoyable at all. This is mainly because it now requires more time at the airport due to thorough security checks at different points on your way to boarding the aircraft.  That extra time at the airport, although necessary for our own sake, for moms means less time to prepare things, get kids ready and leave the house in order before heading to the airport.

But from now on you can leave all those controls behind thanks to the new FlyClear card. It is called the FlyClear Card! This card entitles its holder to bypass security in the airport and not be gang-tackled by homeland security. Nice!

To get one, you have to go to a "Clear Center" and present two official identification cards. Then you have to take a photo and give them your biometric information (your fingerprint and iris image). Bring your US passport as one of your official identification card, just in case, and if you are not a US Citizen, no worries, foreign people are welcomed into this program too. The major airports already have this technology implemented.  To see if your local airport has it, click here.

The only BUT with this program is that this luxury will cost you $128 in fees per person per year, and a few minutes of hassle. It's a great program for those frequent travelers, but not so much for the average family.

If you can afford it, go for it, it will save moms lots of time and headaches!
