Polish-born Max Factor literally created a glamour revolution in 1914 when he produced the first makeup made specifically for motion pictures. At the early age of eight, Max was placed in an apprenticeship to a pharmacist and after years of mixing formulas for the pharmacy, Max developed a fascination with cosmetics. After opening his own shop in Russia, Factor found his claim to fame when the traveling Russian Royal Ballet bought and wore his makeup for a performance. Following his move to the United States, he developed twelve shades of a thinner greasepaint in cream form as opposed to the thicker greasepaints used in theater. Using leading actresses as his canvas, Factor created legendary ultra-glam looks that became the source of Hollywood’s success. In 1920, Factor developed the “Color Harmony” principles of makeup, which was the idea that certain combinations of a woman’s complexion, hair, and eye coloring were most effectively complimented by specific makeup shades. He continued to develop his brand and in 1928, produced cosmetics specifically for use in black and white films, winning him an Oscar. Factor launched the modern retail industry when women demanded for themselves the striking looks he had created for Hollywood’s finest. To this day, his unique formulas highlight the visual assets of women and the label has become synonymous with beauty and fashion to millions worldwide. From Clara Bow’s lips to Carmen Electra’s eyes, MAX Factor is the source of glamour; MAX Factor is makeup.
